OpenStack 是一個由 NASA (美國國家航空航天局) 和 Rackspace 合作研發，以 Apache 許可證授權的自由軟體和開放原始碼方案 (Open Source Solution)。

OpenStack 是開放原始程式碼的雲端計算平台 (Cloud Computing Platform)，由以下幾個主要的元件組合起來完成具體工作。

OpenStack 支援幾乎所有類型的雲端環境，目標是提供實施簡單、可大規模擴展、豐富、標準統一的雲端計算平台。

OpenStack 通過各種互補的服務提供了雲基礎架構服務 (Infrastructure as a Service - Iaas) 的解決方案，每個服務提供 API 以進行集成。

OpenStack 是一個旨在為公共雲端 (Public Cloud) 及私有雲端 (Private Cloud) 的建設與管理提供軟體的開源方案。OpenStack 方案的首要任務是簡化雲端的部署過程並為其帶來良好的可擴展性 (Scalability)。

透過 OpenStack 雲計算平台，服務商和企業內部便可實現類似於 Amazon EC2 和 Microsoft Azure 的雲基礎架構服務。

OpenStack 包含兩個主要模組：Nova 和 Swift，Nova 是 NASA 開發的虛擬伺服器部署和業務計算模組；後者是 Rackspace開發的分散式雲存儲模組 (Shared-Nothing Distributed Storage)，兩者可以合作一起使用，也可以分開單獨使用。

OpenStack 除了有 NASA 和 Rackspace 的大力支持外，還有包括 IBM、HP、Dell、Citrix、Cisco、Oracle、VMware、Redhat、Canonical (Ubuntu) 等重量級公司的貢獻和支援，發展速度非常迅速。

OpenStack 套裝軟件包含大量元件，本課程將為學員逐一教授 OpenStack 的運算 (Nova)、身份管埋 (Keystone)、影像管理 (Glance)、虛擬網絡 (Neutron)、虛擬儲存 (Cinder/Swift) 及監控 (Horizon) 等等 OpenStack 雲端數據中心必用的虛擬化技術，令學員對 OpenStack 運作擁有根基而重要的知識！
